Made in Common is Bendigo’s first shared creative space. Opened in April in 2015, Made in Common is a functioning retail and studio collaboration between Lucy Armstrong, Georgie Armstrong, Leon Sboots and Alisha Weekly.
Together they operate a unique upstairs space on the first floor in one of Bendigo’s most historic buildings. The space offers 5 individual creative working spaces that flow seamlessly between each other. Georgie and Alisha host a women’s retail and hair salon. Leon works in a leather workshop (featured in image below) and photography studio and Lucy is a textile artist.
Made in Common is a working space where customers can view leather transformed from hide into bespoke goods, hair being cut, new and recycled fabrics being sewn to make wonderful accessories or watch a photo shoot take place in the studio area. Director Rohan Donnelly says, “The space has been designed to be an interactive environment where artists with new ideas can support one another in their enterprise and creative endeavors.”
Rohan’s vision for Made in Common is to promote up and coming designers and their products. It is all about giving a leg up – it is really hard to break into retail when you are small. All the suppliers we have, from around the world, are just starting out. “We give them a chance to get their name out their to grow.”
