“There were a few people who were passionate about good beer and Bendigo, so they started Bendigo Beer,” smiles Chris Kelly, one of the shareholders of Bendigo Community Ventures. “Being a part of that was really what planted the seed to open Handle Bar.”
The Bendigo Community Bank model of group ownership inspired the group of locals to form a community company of shareholders to back the creation of Handle Bar.
Described as a garden bar on its Facebook page, it is a hidden open-air quadrangle surrounded by the rear walls of inner Bendigo business. It’s Bendigo’s newest activated space for the (over-18s!) Bendigo community, opening soon.
Places for Change is hosted by the City of Greater Bendigo and Make a Change Australia.
