Coming to the Lancefield-Cobaw region, is Outside the Square event “Celebrating Community”.
It’s a community gathering where everyone is welcome to share news, ideas and inspiration. It is taking place on Sunday the 5th of June and in the lead up we have been hearing from lots of community members about what they reckon their community needs.
They are interested in ways that communities can be active in creating their own plans and be responsible for setting their own direction.
“Our community is doing incredible stuff,” acknowledges Michelle. “We need to raise greater awareness of this, as well as demonstrate how more community members can get involved. Outside the Square will provide the opportunity for this to happen.”
A Transition Town model is the opposite of sitting in armchairs complaining about what’s wrong. It’s about getting up and doing something constructive about it alongside neighbours and fellow townsfolk.
“We’ll use the Transitions Town model surveying as many people as possible on all the key areas of life like food, energy, transport, health, economics & livelihoods,” says Vivien. “At the completion of the survey we will be able to see our region’s strengths and weaknesses and grow a shared sense of what we all want for the future.”
“Sometimes the biggest challenge to over come when you want to make something happen, is getting the word out to everyone.”
Outside the Square will be a great way to interact with different people,” says Vivien. “We are also planning to engage people in our Transition Town project by hosting community breakfasts and a progressive street party.”
“Celebrating Community” is a special event to celebrate the awesome communities of Lancefield, Romsey, Cobaw, Benloch and Baynton: to share successes, discuss needs and explore visions for the future prosperity of the region.
The afternoon will consist of local talks, discussion, mingling and yummy food.
