Golden Square Uniting Church was the first church built in Bendigo during the gold rush.  For community member and musician David Wright, and many others in the community of Bendigo, it holds great value.

Over the years the church’s congregation has dwindled, and the church is often unused. There is community division over the future of the building, captured in a recent Bendigo Advertiser report.  “My argument is that this building was built by the people of Golden Square and held in trust by the Uniting Church,” David explains. “I am concerned that the building will be sold and that the building will no longer be available to the public.”

David has a deep connection to the church and has played the historic and National Trust classified, pipe organ for many services and events.  “My vision is for this building to become a museum or a recital space.  It has so much potential to be used by our community.”

Places for Change is hosted by the City of Greater Bendigo and Make a Change Australia.
